The Latest Wasted “Debate”
It was over before it started
The Free Press advertised “Our Next Debate: Would America Be Safer Without the Second Amendment?”
Personally, despite being “well attended, I’m not sorry I missed it. It took place November 25, 2025 at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago, featuring legal scholar Alan Dershowitz and radio host Dana Loesch. The event “aimed to address the contentious topic of gun rights in America, which is deeply tied to the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”
As we say at the rifle range, the results weren’t even on the paper.
Maybe The Free Press offered a summary or critique. Not being a Paid Subscriber, I asked GROK and some other AIs for one. Here’s what I got:
Alan Dershowitz expressed a critical view, humorously grading the framers of the Second Amendment with a C+, suggesting that the amendment could be better articulated for modern context.
Dana Loesch, supporting gun rights, likely argued that gun ownership represents a fundamental freedom and a check against government power.
Is that it?? I asked: In other words, no new or nuanced statements, positions, understandings, or revelations made it off the stage? Rehashing the “awkward” wording and repeating the line about “gun rights” being a “fundamental freedom” have been bandied about since the 1968 Gun Control Act. Weren’t any original contentions postulated?
The debate did not present new policy proposals or innovative approaches to addressing gun violence or reforming gun laws. Instead, it reinforced existing arguments without exploring middle-ground solutions.
I hope Counselor Dershowitz and Ms. Loesch were paid handsomely for something anyone who proudly owns a firearm could have said while reloading.
I wasn’t invited, but answers to any 2nd Amendment questions will never be found in the sad, redundant, clichéd rhetoric that passes for “debate” in any venue.
Clues that The Free Press was off the rails before their “debate” began could be found in an article promoting it, posted in October. The young writer didn’t make it through the second graph before ruefully scribbling, “ Gun violence has become grimly familiar.”
Typically, the scribe continues the fiction of “gun violence. Regular readers know there is no use in belaboring the simple fact: there is no such thing as “gun violence”. There is Human Violence perpetrated on people by deranged people using guns, cars, hammers, knives, blunt objects, fists, hands, matches, etc. Paint it on the walls: there is no such thing as gun violence. Once that is understood, the wailing and gnashing of Karens and dentures will cease, along with the embarrassing rhetoric of the Aggressively Ignorant.
And another thing.
Your “2nd Amendment rights to own a firearm” aren’t. The 2nd Amendment does not confer anything to anyone. It is a prohibition on the Federal government from passing laws infringing on firearm ownership. That distinction has been made for decades by John Lott, Jr., Massad Ayoob, Tom Gresham, Dr. Walter Williams – and those are just the people I know who repeatedly said so on the air, coast to coast. Maybe we didn’t say it loud enough. So now it’s up to you and your like-minded friends. It’s that important. Unless you want to see your neighborhood become a London, Bondi, NYC, Chicago or other garden spots where getting a bullet is more common than a parking ticket.
Last point
You may have heard the Providence, RI government and police slugs tell local viewers they were doing everything to “keep citizens safe”. They’re not the only ones playing this mind game. Ask any of them: safe from what? A still-at-large shooter of 9, killer of 3? And while the shooter was still at large, these asshats lifted the “shelter in place” order. So here’s the rub:
“Stay Safe” – from what? Start with irresponsible, egotistical, incompetent government snallygasters and police dudes with funny hats and too many medals.
It is likely- maybe a guarantee – your best friends, relatives and acquaintances don’t know the significance of these SCOTUS decisions:
Warren v. District of Columbia (1981)
DeShaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services (1989)
Castle Rock v. Gonzales (2005)
Look ‘em up.
(In the landmark Warren case, three women in Washington, D.C., called the police while being assaulted in their home. The police responded, but after observing nothing wrong, they left. The women were subsequently attacked and sued the police for failing to protect them. The complete story is more horrible than one can imagine)
The Big Reveal
The Supreme Court has ruled several times that the police do not have a constitutional obligation to protect individuals in specific situations. This underscores the limitations on citizens’ ability to hold police accountable for their failure to respond effectively to calls for help or to expect them to even show up “in a timely manner.”
More importantly, it establishes beyond any doubt or debate or feel-good legislation that firearm ownership is a right, a natural, God-given right, not a permission slip from a tolerant government, serving as a primary means of self-defense as well as the last bulwark against Tyranny.
With SCOTUS precedents establishing the legal basis that police have no obligation to protect you, are you “feeling safe” now?
Every “gun control”, anti-gun, anti-2nd Amend article, anti-carry article I’ve read over 5 decades has contained fear-mongering errors, omissions, personal and political bias, misinformation, and outright lies.
If politicians and governments were, in fact, guardians of freedom and natural rights, the 2ndA wouldn’t be required. The natural logic of self-defense, coupled with a faithful and cognizant government, would acknowledge the sanctity of firearm ownership. ANY firearm. But we already know “cognizant government” is a first-class oxymoron.
What’s left to “debate”? Semantics? Deniable statistics? Selective anecdotes that ignore extensive evidence?
Someone tell The Free Press, I’d be thrilled to participate in their next “Would America Be Safer Without the Second Amendment?” debate.
On a more personal/seasonal note, as your BWW host and nostalgic human lima bean, I, along with Cassie and Gracie, wish you the merriest of Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or, if you count yourself among the agnostic-atheist crowd, have a Nice Day! May whatever comes down your chimney be pleasant.
FWIW, I’ll be wandering into Our Lady of Perpetual Guilt Hospital and Torture Chamber tomorrow morning to get a dose of chloroform and some new parts installed. If there is an undue delay in ‘Whatever’s Next’ from BWW, please understand Sister Mary Elephant and the Little Sisters of Immaculate Skivvies aren’t big fans and have ways of showing it……..

Government violence has always been grimly familiar.

Allbest on your hospital visit for your refurbishment. Merry Christmas!
Those who hope (and plan) to command their fellow humans, all agree that their efforts to do, so would be made considerably easier, if their would-be subjects had no effective way to oppose them. Doesn't matter what orders they would issue, nor to whom. Experience shows that disarmed people tend ro be far more obedient, than those bearing the means to resist ... hence, an unending campaign to disarm putative subjects. Are you one of them?
