Well written. However I have visceral dislike of the phrase political atheism. You correctly identified an analogy where some people abandon their faith in God because of the abuses they’ve witnessed in a church. But that’s not virtuous or clear-eyed. It’s naive and a bit immature. The premise of Christianity has always been that people (and therefore the institutions created by them) are deeply flawed. God is not diminished by our failures to follow him faithfully. And the principles of good governance aren’t diminished because there are so few who cling to them faithfully. The answer is not to be a political atheist but rather a heretic who pushes back on the group think and jargon. One can still believe while standing against the abuses.

Yes - political atheism - political heresy - is indeed on the rise. The prevailing religion of the United States is a demented fantasy of a just and beneficent federal government - an insane delusion.
