My mother in law hates Trump with all the passion of a true MSNBC devote, meanwhile she bitches non-stop about what liberal policies have done to her State and her City. (Salinas Ca.) Her Husband worked for the SEIU as a rabble rousser, liked to get his picture in the papers leading striking field workers, that's kind of stuff.
Two aging hippies, still got their VW van, she has pictures of her at the Monterey Pop Festival, that kind of stuff. She can't stand that the Mexicans have taken over Salinas, She's half by the way, her father is straight from Mexico. Although in Mexico he'd probably have been considered "white", he was only a quarter Indian, six foot one, blue eyes and fair skin .
She can't stand the car regulations and the high utility bills that are the result of their lefty politicians. She can't stand the gas tax, she can't stand the endless nanny rules. She hates the homeless now, when in the past she'd be the one handing out blankets when it got cold. But that's when they were few and far between and didn't live in her neighborhood. Her property taxes went sky high to pay for a huge school that is just for the illegals. Salinas is a sanctuary city, although they call it "immigrant friendly".
If the Left had to stand on their own policies alone, nobody in their right mind would support them, not even my hippy in-laws, but they have the "boogieman" fascist, right wing terrorists to contend with as their only option. They are hippies after all, they can't be part of the right can they?
If only the Right itself wasn't so screwed up they would be a lot harder to use as a boogieman, I think the Bush war years really cemented the idea that no lefty in their right mind would even think of supporting them. They see Trump as worse than Bush, not based on actual policy, but based on MSNBC BS.
My Mother turned off the news not long after my Father passed away, she no longer watches any of it and also stopped voting, she said screw it, they are all crooks.
They get along well. She flies out ever so often to visit, I've never seen them talk politics, although it would be interesting if they did. Maybe if I get Mom in Law to drink a few glasses of wine I could get her started. Hmmmm.
I think a lot of us have relatives like this in our families. Their beliefs are everything that Trump is trying to achieve, but because it is Trump, they vote for the other side. They voted for Harris, which makes no sense at all. It will be interesting to see when Trump's term is up and the next republican, hopefully Vance, runs if these nut jobs will actually vote republican or stay with the Dems.
It would be interesting to see a poll of what that number might be. You know my position on polls, but, to my knowledge, that "question" has never been tried.
I think it's too bad that MAGA has been labeled as extremists, had they been more middle ground they could have scooped up a ton of these types of ticked off voters.
It's possible that JD will get the nod and be able to position himself as more moderate and less crazy. Time will tell, but with the media the way it is, it's hard to ever see sanity ruling again.
I think the people do want a "return to normal". Sadly, I don't see the media allowing that to happen. They must think it's more profitable to do muckraking tabloid nonsense instead no matter how badly the country suffers because of it.
