Great article, Brian. When I was in 8th grade at Holy Family School in Lincoln, Nebraska, I prayed to God for an interesting life. He gave me one.

People always quote that Chinese saying, "May you have an interesting life" as an insult. The Chinese do like their blue pills, eh? That's why all they can do is copy us.

I like the red pills. Sure, six months in Belem, Brazil in 1990 not knowing a soul when I got there for the job on the film was a leap of faith. It was a red pill, though. A big red pill. Life 120 miles south of the Equator at the mouth of the Amazon River sure as hell isn't a safe blue pill back in my condo in Edmonds, Washington just north of Seattle.

Still, after six months of red pill madness, I wanted to go home for some blue pill peace of mind and health. Now 34 years later my Irish skin is rotting off of my face and hands. That equatorial sun is a bitch.

The truth may well set you free and lead to enlightenment, but it isn't free.

I'm impressed with your prolific profundity. I find myself O.D'ing on the red pill and am frequently frozen.
