I'd really like to know if Walz was paid as a retired E-9. From the looks of his paperwork and how long they took to correct it, I'd say it's likely he was paid retirement based on E-9 for years.
As an "acting" e-9 he would have been receiving E-9 pay and generally speaking your last pay grade is what they base retirement pay on. It's so exceedingly rare for anyone of that rank to lose rank after they retire, that it would have been an easy mistake for PAC (Pay and Allowance Continuation) to make and PAC makes a ton of mistakes. Rarely do soldier go out of their way to fix errors made by PAC, at least not when they are in their own benefit.
Three years after he left, they corrected his record to reflect the fact that he hadn't earned E-9 and he was officially reduced to E-8. He knew fully well during those three years that he had not earned E-9 retirement pay, if he continued to accept pay at a rank he knew he hadn't earned, that's fraud, on top of his lies.
Keep in mind that for some unknown reason he didn't sign his separation paperwork, which is used to verified his rank at retirement, he was "unavailable". Because he wasn't around to sign off on it he also didn't have to Lie under oath which is what signing any military document is considered if you know it's wrong.
And while a lot of people don't care about stolen valor, (me included, steal all of mine you want) many people do care about fraud.
I'd like to see at least one reporter ask him this question directly; Did you ever receive E-9 retirement pay and if so, for how long, and why didn't you correct the mistake right away?
