To finish the story, the Pinkerton's had used the farmer's house next door to the James' farm as an HQ. Probably at gunpoint. Jesse came back to the Jesse farm looking for revenge. He shot his neighbor the farmer who had housed the Pinkerton's. The farmer was not surprised and knew that he was a dead man once the Pinkerton's used his house as the HQ for the bombing.
The Lemp killing reminds me of when the Pinkerton's threw 2 bombs through the window of the home of the James family in Missouri. They were trying to kill Jesse and Frank but only killed the 9 year old half-brother of Jesse and blew off the right arm of his mother. Jesse and Frank weren't even in the vicinity.
The farmhouse is still there north of Kansas City. My wife and I have toured it. The James family still owns the property and has a museum there and gives tours.
